a question about custom builds from the early 90's

Hi y'all,

Back in the early 90's I custom ordered an Archtop Custom over the phone with the guys at Hamer. They were cool and steered me clear of anything that might compromise the kind of near-perfection I was chasing.

Essentially, what I wanted was a Hamer version of a '57 Black Beauty. They sent me an absolute gem that has never let me down. It's gone through many pickup and wiring changes, as most of my guitars do, but the tone and playability of it set a very high bar for the rest of my collection. Freshly refretted, it's frightening once again like all great Hamers.🙂

Here's the thing: the serial number doesn't mesh with any of the listed numbers nor Hamer dating methods I found, so is there a data base for strictly custom builds available to us?

It seems to me custom builds would have a careful documentation to reflect the specifications originally requested for the build. I'm hoping I'm correct and I can appeal to someone in the group to open that archive.

Over the years I've had many, many Hamers and they have all been keepers but now all I have left are the Archtop Custom, a Daytona(tremendous!) a Blitz, and a Vector. Each one has it's own kind of tone and playability that has made each a righteous studio instrument.

I'm so glad to be a part of a great bunch of tone lovers! That's what these guitars bring to the table every time. Cheers to all!

What’s the serial number?  It shouldn’t be out of sequence.  There were an extremely small number of custom serials, but only a few and those were for high profile artists.

Custom orders/custom builds received regular production serial numbers.

The four-digit serials were used for custom instruments, but those were stopped long before the 1990s.
