Cboss Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 If anyone could weigh in, I'm wondering if there is a significant tone, sustain, Etc difference between a correctly set up floating Floyd and one that is decked, especially coupled to the body for dive only
Jeff R Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 Overall tone is thicker and darker with a decked bridge, especially if decking a recessed Floyd by using a quality hardwood "stopper" between the bridge block and the body wall. In that scenario, I usually cut my stopper off a plank of a nicely dried mahogany neck blank in my scrap stash. I've always floated my Floyds and subsequently thought the tone contributions of decking were psychological BS ... until I started decking other people's guitars in enough quantity to pass judgement, thanks to my repair shop. You can definitely hear a difference. On a very related note, I also thought brass block upgrades on Floyds were smoke and mirrors until I sampled before/after results on other people's guitars on my bench. Great solution if you want that thicker, darker tone and improved fundamental sustain but are a floating bridge fan by default and don't want to deck.
Cboss Posted May 13, 2023 Author Posted May 13, 2023 Thanks so much for the great answer and info! I put the fat brass Block in all of mine and I'm a huge fan, it is definitely noticeable, beautiful sweet sustain and tone
