are Gibson serial numbers engraved now?

looking at a Les Paul, 017xxx... serial. My first thought is "it's a fake, prove me wrong". This one looks correct (good headstock angle, Gibson Deluxe tuners well aligned), but the serial number is engraved (like laser etched, where the wood is removed) rather than stamped/embossed. Which is correct for a new-ish Gibson?

thanks!  I didn't write it down or take a photo, but that's what the number looks like, - no 'made in usa' as I recall.  I'm now certain that this one is just a somewhat better counterfeit than I've seen previously.
