backinit Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Soon I will looking for a 4 x 12 or 2 x 12 8 ohm cabinet. I discovered a small stash of 2' x 4' 1/2" birch plywood in the basement. Could I get decent results fabricating a 2 x 12 cabinet maybe using a 3/4" particle board baffle with the 1/2" stock I already have?
Hamer Bass Head Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 use plywood all aound, and either reverse engineer a cabinet you like or get plans online. You can't expect too much if you just "wing it" and mak a box.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiele/Smallthere are computer programs to help with this but stillthis stuff is a pain in the ass to wrap your head around, (I've tried) and it's much easier to use someone else's design. thiese plans are for ev 12-l's, and probably the best-of-the-best:http://tubenexus.com/wp-content/uploads/TL...lders_Plans.pdfmore info:http://tubenexus.com/2008/04/05/whats-a-tl...abinet-you-ask/you may find some info around here too:http://www.eminence.com/oh and here's a link to the design software:http://www.kbapps.com/audio/speakerdesign/...ors/Default.htm
Steve Haynie Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 My Marshall cabs have particle board backs, but the baffle boards are plywood. My Fender cabs are all plywood. A friend suggested that particle board baffle board might have a dampening effect which could be useful for certain types of amps. The easiest way to "tune" a cabinet without reengineering dimensions and ports is to experiment with adding insulation inside the cabinet.
JGale Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 London Power has a pretty good book on speaker cabinet design and construction that includes plans.Check out their detuned cab. I tried it with a standard 4x10 pulling two speakers. Me likey.
backinit Posted July 28, 2009 Author Posted July 28, 2009 Well that solves that...I found a Bullfrog slant cab made of plywood for just over $100. I tried my head on it and it sounds pretty good.
HSB0531 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Re: particle board - use 3/4 plywood instead, or double up on the 1/2-ply if you don't want to buy the extra 3/4" wood. What brand & model speakers were you going to use btw?
backinit Posted July 30, 2009 Author Posted July 30, 2009 Not going to happen. See my above post. I just hauled a BFI plywood cabinet home. I'm going to take the grille off to paint it and will pop a speaker out of that. Not any experience with them, but I would love to try some Rajun Cajuns. Maybe this cabinet will get a couple down the road.
