Nuclear Wessel Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I'll be bringing this to the MWJ if anyone at the jam is interested. I want Bruce's Newport and I've made the painful decision to put this Cali up for sale to partially finance that deal. 1990 IIRC, Cali Elite, candy apple red (this finish really looks sweet!) with Hamer fit-all case. I have the trem bar. The spring cover plate was gone when I got it. I cut a black plastic spring cover to size to replace it, but didn't do the neatest job cutting the plastic. I'll include it. Has its share of bruises. The usual checking around the neck pocket. Several spots on the front where previous owners bumped into stuff, but nothing through to the wood on the front. On the back, some more spots where it's been bumped, and by the bottom strap button, a spot where the strap wore away the paint on the edge of the body. Still looks decent, but it's evident that it's been played a lot. Has that broken in, rounded off feel. Moderate amount of fret wear. Feels like an old friend. I hate to part with this, but if I do, I'd like to sell this at the MWJ Saturday. I am only selling this to raise money for Bruce's Newport Pro. I can replace the Dimarzio Clip Lock strap with black Dunlop Strap Lok knobs. I can also replace the Ultrasonic Ref3 neck pickup (which is actually a great match in output and a great contrast in tone to the bridge Trembucker) with a Duncan Trembucker stack. I'd actually prefer to keep the Ultrasonic. But I won't have time to swap it out before the MWJ. If you're at the jam and interested, and want the Trembucker Stack, I can mail you the Trembucker, you mail me the Ultrasonic later. Sorry, this is a sort of spur of the moment descision brought on by looking at Bruce's Newport here at work all day. $575 at the jam. I'll bring it so you can look the guitar over carefully. This is the only pic I have now and I won't get a chance to shoot more before the MWJ. As I said, it's got signs of player wear - heavy agressive rockin' wear. If it doesn't sell at the jam, I will likely just hold on to it. I'll decide next week.
atquinn Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Please tell me more about this Ultrasonic Ref3 neck pickup. I'm still in search of the perfect neck pickup for my Cali. The Carvin Twinblade in there now is nice, but I'm always on the look out for other options and I haven't heard of that pickup before.-Austin
Nuclear Wessel Posted April 21, 2006 Author Posted April 21, 2006 Ultrasonics were made in the latter half of the 80's. They're from West Germany. They're passive and hum cancelling. The ads said they had a completely flat frequency response, so players could get any tone they want by using EQ's. The tone is very uncolored. For some players they sound too flat or neutral. What I like is the crystal clarity. They're very hi-fi. You hear individual strings much better than with most pickups. Great for clean passages. They make the Trembucker sound all smeared and muddy by comparison.
atquinn Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Hmm, I tend to like smeared and muddy (I'm a P90 fan after all ), so maybe I should stay away from Ultrasonics .
