Guest Buck Dharma Posted April 10, 2005 Posted April 10, 2005 Does anyone know how to set the height on a Stop Tailpiece? I have seen some that are tight against the body and others that are raised up to 1/4'. Does this affect resonance? This is in regards to my Special FM, the action is very low no buzz but the first string kinda hits the fretts when playing around the 15th fret or higher gets a dull sound. I think it probably needs the Truss adjusted. It has very low action and no buzz. I wish I lived a little closer to BCR! Thanks for any advice!!!
David B Posted April 10, 2005 Posted April 10, 2005 I dont know what it does. Mine are all the way down though because it looks better! Haha
BCR Greg Posted April 10, 2005 Posted April 10, 2005 I set them so that the string is JUST above the edge of the tunamatic behind the saddle. Too much angle and the strings will break easily, too little and sustain suffers.YMMV.An upcoming Bench Report will be on a typical setup. Anyone wanting a particular guitar setup report, I will gladly do one for you.

Guest cruster Posted April 10, 2005 Posted April 10, 2005 How about a setup bench report on a wraparound tail. That's be cool!
jujisque Posted April 10, 2005 Posted April 10, 2005 Too much angle and the strings will break easily, too little and sustain suffers. I had thought that a low string angle was better for sustain (at least in string through body guitars). Is that backwards?
Guest Mike Lee Posted April 10, 2005 Posted April 10, 2005 I agree with Greg. Set the bridge for desired action and then adjust the stop tailpiece so the strings just clear the back edge of the bridge. If the tailpiece is too low the strings "break" on the back edge of the bridge, creating an extra stress point. If the tailpiece is too high, the strings will not be held firmly enough against the bridge saddles, and sustain suffers.I've never seen an advange to tightening the tailpiece all the way down. It makes the action feel stiffer to me.
