Volume and quality of sound

Do any of you HFC members have guitars that might sound ho-hum at lower volumes through your amps but really come into their own at gigging levels?

Som of my guits sound great at low volumes and great at gigging level but a couple are just yawners until the volume gets over 2 with my DSL 100.

I'd have to say that what you're hearing is actually differences in the operating level of the amp. A tube amp's sweet spot is never at the bottom of the dial....in fact, they sound their best when they're just about ready to blow.

True...Im able to use a hotplate though and while at some levels one guitar will sounds great another will not untill you kick it up a notch. This is true when using any of my amps.

Strats tend to sound great at lower volumes. But when played loud they often sound thin and strident. IMO P90's work best if you want single coils but play LOUD.

The ear hears frequencies differently at different volume levels. I've found that amps and guitars with a stout midrage may sound boxy and small at low volumes, but come alive at gig levels. Guitars and amps with a lot of bass/treble and less mids sound better at low volumes, but get lost at gig levels.

I guess it depends on what kind of tone you are going for. Personally I can't get tones I like at low volume. I tried using a Power Brake with my Marshalls but hated it. I play the 50 watt 1987X and the 100 watt 1959SLP. The 50 sounds okay but the 100 watt is what I really like. It just really stinks that you can't get that sound at low volume.

Alot of "tone" has to do with the volume at which your playing as far as getting the speakers to actually start flexing their muscle!!
