Ebay: buying guitars from Japan

Been looking at some Fenders on Ebay, offered up by dealers in Japan. One dealer has a 99.1% positive on 1500+ feedback. The cost is $90 to ship to the US (2 to 5 day delivery), and paypal is accepted.

What do I need to look out for? When do Customs fees come into play?

Thanks.

Chris:

THere are a few dealers who are somehow getting around the customs issue. Not sure how they do it, but they advertise as being American sellers in Japan. I've seen on a few other forums where people have purchased from them for a relatively low shipping cost and have not gotten whacked with anything going through Customs. Hmmmm...

I'd definitely check w/the seller first on how they do that - assuming they are willing to tell ya!

I've purchased 2 or 3 guitars from Japan via ebay. In each case, the guitar went through customs with no duty charges. They take 3-4 days to get to KY from Japan. The seller that I've bought from is Katana Guitars (ebay ID mijsixstringskatana). He packs the guitars very well for shipping and they have been exactly as described. $90 is right where shipping should be fom Japan using EMS.

Thanks CP.... Same seller. Seems to have some cool Fenders that you don't see here in the States.

Exactly - he's one of the three I have checked out. Great place to find oddball Fender Jpn stuff as well as Orvilles, Tokais, etc. from the 89s and 90s.

You shouldn't have any problems with Katana. I bought a very nice Burny SG last Saturday, he had it shipped by Sunday and it got to me on Thursday. No case, but packed very well for international travel. I know that some think that his prices are a bit high on new pieces compared to going directly to a Japan dealer like Ishibashi. But, IMO, the ease of buying through ebay and getting the guitar lightning fast with no hassles is worth it.
