While there are a few black '62 RI's out there ( I used to have a matching set of a '62 strat & tele) you'll be hard pressed to find one with the maple/maple neck unless someone has swapped the original neck out for a '57 RI. "62's have the rosewood fingerboard.

Yup. Which model are you talkin'? Strat, Tele Custom, P-Bass, Jazz Bass, Jag or Jazzmaster? Fender did each in a '62 RI. Black was a standard finish for each at one point or another.

If yer talkin' '52 RI, there were a few in black, but not many.

Hmmmm. OPSO has one. It is black with a maple/maple neck. Slightly shallow thickness that felt real nice in my hands. He said is was a 62 reissue and it would cost me plenty to get from him. I'll check the serial number. I want one.

Edited to add: It is a Strat.

Thanks.

Not a '62 if it's maple. The '57 Strats have a little more of a soft "V" neck than the '62s, but both are comfortable. Depending on what "plenty" is, these should be readily available. If it is an '82 or '83 reissue (let me know the serial and I could tell you), they're REALLY good IMHO. Remember that the serial numbers started at "V000001" again in 1985 when they started making them in the US again after the sale (the original ones were CBS made from 1982-early '84).

The 82 Reissues (last time I looked) were selling in the $2500-3250 range, depending on condition and finish. I haven't looked in a while b/c I've owned a few and don't want to spend that much $$ on a Strat or Tele at the moment. THE best Tele I ever owned (and one of the best guitars I've ever owned period) was a super-early production 52 RI. No neck date, just a "VINTAGE" stamp on the neck heel, #0650 on the bridge and 81 pots. I've owned and played quite a few '82s and '83s and they were all really good. Strats and Teles. I think that Fender took their time on these for the most part, even though I'm sure that there were some dogs in there-I just never ran across one.

Thanks. I see "soft vee" in the after market literature. Can you catagorize the the taper on those early necks?
