atquinn Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 THIS PUPPY HAS BEEN SOLD PENDING PAYMENT. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO EXPRESSED INTEREST IN IT! Well, about a month after getting this back from Greg, what should happen to turn up but the one PRS Custom 22 Soapbar with a neck profile that would actually file my hand? With the Custom 22 Soapbar in the house, I no longer need this, so it's up for sale. It has Seymour Duncan Hot P90's in the neck and middle (which are a bit thicker and hotter than the pickups in the CU22 Soapy) and a Manlius Goat Growl P90 in the bridge (which is a tiny bit twangier than the bridge in the CU22 Soapy). Plus, the minswitch is wired as a bridge-always-on switch so you can get the neck+bridge and all-3 pickup combos. I'm looking for $850 shipped. Here's a pic Greg took before he shipped it to me; I'll try to take some of my own later this week. Thanks for looking. - Austin
DavidE Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 While I'm with you on the PMS (I have an SE Maple Soapbar II and a McCarty Soapbar), that Mirage looks awesome!!!
Guest Mike Lee Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Supposedly, the PRS Soapbar guitars have a Duncan Vintage Neck P90 in the neck position, and a Duncan Custom Neck P90 in the bridge position. The Custom neck isn't wound as Hot as the Custom bridge (12K or so versus 14.5K) so it's supposed to be a little more clear. Interesting choices by Mr. Smith.Atquinn, if you end up replacing the pickups in the PRS, I'd be interested in them.

I thought the Soapies had SD Vintage P90's in the neck and middle (with the neck reverse wound) and a Hot P90 neck in the bridge, but I haven't measured mine so I can't say for sure. In my previous 3 Soapies, the neck always sounded a bit weak and and bassy, but the neck pickup in this one sounds great. The bridge is a bit weak, but that's because I'm used to dealing with hot bridge humbuckers, so it's a nice change (plus it makes the bridge useful for clean stuff). Anyway, enough about my PRS, someone buy my Mirage! -Austin
Guest Mike Lee Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 You can tell the difference between a Hot SD and a Custom SD by the size of the magnets. The Custom ceramic magnets are huge, while the Hot ceramic magnets are the same size as the Vintage alnico magnets. Bridge wind for either is around 14-15K while the neck wind is around 12K.

(I'm asking because I have a Custom P90 sitting around) I'm going to be swappign the winged tuners for Phase II's later this week, so I'll compare the magnets on the bridge and middle pickups when I do.-Austin
Guest Mike Lee Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Yeah, it's pretty easy to swap the magnets and coils around. Some time ago I put a Vintage Neck SD P90 (8K wind) in my Special and liked it. Then I bought a Vintage Bridge (10K) and it was too doinky sounding so I combined the Alnico 5 magnets from the Vintage Bridge with the coil from a Hot Neck (12K) and it sounded pretty good.Per the Duncan website the DC resistance of the Hot is very similar to the Custom, the big difference is the magnets. The wire might be different, but I doubt it. It's probably just 43 gauge plain enamel. You can also reverse the magnets in one pickup and swap the two leads from the coil and make yourself a RWRP pickup. Then you get hum canceling in the middle position on a two pickup guitar. P90's are easier to work on than HB or Fender pickups.
