Tone caps?????

Anyone have preferences for caps and brand? I have gone through some vitamin Qs, Orange drop 225

and orange drop 715(polypropylene), and mallory .022 (150) and really don't hear a difference, especially in a band situation!

Even the ceramic caps on some of my guitars are fine! What does Hamer use? Looks like a little small cap...dot or something.

Thanks!

The types that don't sound good seem to be Tantalum & electrolytic.

Polypropylene & Mylar are good.

If they are the some value, it would be next to impossible to tell the difference.

some are just more expensive du to manufacturing/materials/country of origin/cork sniffery

especially in the guitar

I agree! I was using the stock ceramics, then tried the Orange Drop Polyester 225s. I was told the Orange Drtop Polypropylene 715 werte better but I'll be damned if I hear a difference! I even bought some Hovlands which do kind of add a bright hi fi - ness to the sound, maybe! I tried some Vitamin Q caps and again....I'll be damned if I notice anything! I'd rather concentrate on playing.

I ended up ordering some of those small dots from BCR Greg. They are really small and I think .010, but fine for the neck and so small, easy to work with. I just kept the Vit Qs and 715s in the bridge since I bought them. LOL.

I even stopped experimenting much with pickups, especially the cork sniffer boutique stuff. I think Duncan, Rio Grande, Dimarzio, Gibson and PRS are all good enough for me....plus they are everywhere used.

I, on the other hand, prefer the RS paper in oil caps. They give a nice lazy, hazy, crazy dayz of summer honk to the output when turned down and the gain is low.

I use 3 volumes & no tone.

I do all the adjustments at the pre-amp.

Then again I play bass.

Another Freak,

Did you have any Orange Drop 225 caps? These are the polyester, not the 715 polypropylenes. They are so readily available I just use these! Heck, I have stock Gibsons and PRS models with ceramics that sound wonderful. I agree with you!

I'll have to look, it was a couple of years ago, when I was reading a lot of BS from some pedal builders, and working with a student with one of his builds. I seem to aquire all this crap, and it was a great experiment. I'm sure I still have it.

I'm still using the yellow M&Ms.
