hamerhead Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Did he ever play with a quarter, or was that just a story?I think it was a peso.......Deguello has some killer stuff on it, but no one ever mentions 'Tejas'. Probably too countryfied coming on the heels of Fandango, but good stuff on there, too.
59burst Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Tejas is one of my favorites, right up there with Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, and Deguello. Really, anything up to El Loco. Even their '80's albums had a few gems on them. Rhythmeen is very good too. He can still tear it up. Best song? Too many to choose. Just Got Paid, Asleep in the Desert, Nationwide, Jesus Just Left Chicago, Ten Dollar Man, the list goes on. Any time I pick up a guitar I have to play at least one or two ZZ Top songs.
chap Posted June 20, 2009 Author Posted June 20, 2009 How come no one has mentioned Deguello and El Loco? For me, those were THE guitar tone albums. It seems like they have been stuck in Eliminator land ever since. I don't think I heard distortion on any song until Eliminator came along, and now that's all there is. 'Manic Mechanic', 'Heaven, Hell or Houston', "Ten Foot Pole', anyone, anyone? I have been so disappointed the last few times I have seen them. I keep hoping the Reverend Billy G. will return to his old form, but his persona seems more important than playing with feel these days. Maybe I still resent that appearance with Kid Rock . He could lay back in a groove like no one else (in his day). In the end, I only want to see him at his full potential.. and I miss seeing that of late. One of the, if not THE best at what he does (did). Did he ever play with a quarter, or was that just a story? Well for me at least ... Eliminator and Afterburner came out when I was in late elementary. Like most kids at that age, I was pretty clueless. I'm pretty sure I have not heard of ZZ Top at the time but I do remember I was taken by the cool album art of the cars - especially the space-ship flying car on afterburner. I wanted the album (cassette actually) for that reason only - the cover was cool! I only found out I liked their music afterwards. Just imagine when you're in elementary school, just learning about space, orbits, planets etc... and you see this album with a cool car flying in space. What could be cooler? I remember grade 6 / 7 quite clearly in regards to music. This was also when I picked up Shout at the Devil and Theater of Pain.
