zenmindbeginner Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I just can't bring any more guitars home... I should be buying this baby, but hopefully one of y'all will pick her up!Here it is.
DaveinSF Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Would be tempted if the neck weren't so thin and if the guitar was in better cosmetic shape...Considering what Studios go for, $600 for this guitar is high IMHO. I think this was a much more tempting offer on a much, much nicer guitar: http://cgi.ebay.com/USA-Hamer-Studio-in-RA...id=p3286.c0.m14

Why are the members of this board eschewing the vintage Hamers over the newer ones? I think that the Hamers that Jol made in the late seventies and early eighties have a special vibe to them that the newer Hamers just don't have. I mean, the wood is all dried out on these older models and they have sooooo much tone. $600 for a piece of history seems like a steal to me. Maybe it's the Bill Lawrence pickups that are putting people off, I have no idea, it's actually in better shape than you think Dave. I've seen recent models that are in worst shape than this one. It's cosmetic appearance is quite good. I don't think much of the 1993-1997 models personally, I believe that the older models have a lot more of that "Hamer spirit" than the ones made under the corporate ethos. But I'm new here to the forum... what the hell do I know anyway? I mean I only bought my first Hamer when I was 12.
cmatthes Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Different strokes, that's all. Some people like the early stuff, some like the 80s/90s stuff, others swear by what they're doing now. All personal preference, Zenmindbeginner - nobody's right or wrong in this one. And for the record, I think your question, "Why are the members of this board eschewing the vintage Hamers over the newer ones?", indicates that you haven't really been reading this board for the last 10 years!
DaveinSF Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 I have had a few Hamers, too, including a '93 Special with P90s in it. Great guitar, but that neck was very, very slender. Too slender for my tastes.Had another '93 Studio I just sold. Great guitar, great neck. Not quite as thin as the P90. But I have an '01 Studio Custom that is far more resonant. I didn't get $600 for my Special P90, and barely got $600 net for the Studio, which was in far better shape than the Special in this auction. All that wear down to the wood at the base of the horns and neck-- you don't think that's extensive wear? It might be a player, but the guitars I sold had nothing like that kind of player wear on them. And once again, they were '93s. I still have that '01 Studio Custom, as well as a very rare black Archtop GT with P90s in it.I don't want to be uncivil, but it sounds like you are the person who is selling the guitar posing as an interested buyer.Would be tempted if the neck weren't so thin and if the guitar was in better cosmetic shape...Considering what Studios go for, $600 for this guitar is high IMHO. zenmindbeginner Posted September 10, 2009 Author Posted September 10, 2009 I actually bought the damn guitar because I felt bad for the guy and couldn't let a vintage Hamer go to waste. I am absolutely NOT the seller posing as an uninterested buyer. As far as the wear at the base of the horns goes, it'd be pretty easy to repair... the guitar is black. It's all good DaveinSF, I LOVE opinionated people from San Fran.

It's a fact that most people on this board would consider that to be extensive wear. I'm glad you like the guitar. I'm in the market for a Special with humbuckers right now. I'm pretty confident that I should be able to find one that I like in good shape for $500-$600 max.

No Dave, your opinion was that there was another auction that you perceived as being a better value than the one that I mentioned in this thread. I am fully aware that missing paint is indeed a fact... When you do however, score that Special with humbuckers for $600 max, don't hesitate to send me a PM to let me see what you got and feel free to rub my face in it.

Is it me, or is this guy incredibly combative and defensive?? That black STUDIO - not Special- in the other auction was a much better deal IMHO. Personally, I would never pay $500-$600 for a Special that I would have to then repair myself... and I certainly wouldn't buy a guitar because I "felt bad for the guy" selling it, but then again, to each his own.
cmatthes Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Okay - we'll take this down a notch. I'll recommend the virtual handshake and move on.No point in being combative over opinions (that's what the political thread section is for), so the thread is now closed.Specials are cool, Studios are cool, and everybody should have as many of them as they like. Go out there and find the one that rocks you best!
