bobbymack Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 So I was cruising along, listening to my XM Radio Deep Cuts station a couple weeks back, when I hear this tasty, toneful live extended guitar jamming. Turns out to be a tune called Avalon (not the Bryan Ferry version), recorded live by Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush.I find a double live CD on Amazon called Real Live, and order it. Surprise: it was recorded live in Montreal in 2001, no wonder the recording quality is so good. His playing is impressive and VERY toneful (at least for what I like, humbuckers with varying OD), and both discs are very listenable, some downright impressive / rewindable to catch that riff again...Any other fans? I hadn't though about this band in many years...
MCChris Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 I find a double live CD on Amazon called Real Live I've been reading a ton of raves about that one recently. I'll have to get that. His live album from the '70s is excellent. Kind of like Foghat Live ... you listen to it and it seems like you're in a packed football stadium on a hot summer day.
m chops Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Yeah. I've heard cuts from Real Live on Deep Tracks myself, and intend to pick up the CD this weekend. Very tasty.
woodpile Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Huge fan of Frank Marino's playing here. His live disc 1978 stays in the changer. I didn't know he had a recent recording out and will definitely get ahold of a copy.
atquinn Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 I don't have the CD, but I've listened to a few cuts from his website and was very impressed by his playing.-Austin
Turdus Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 He is an artist that I have tried to like, but could never make the connection. I picked up Power Of Rock and Roll on CD about a year ago. That was his 1980 or so attempt at mainstream rock. It sounds very dated, and other than the title track, I can not listen to it. Strange Dreams is probably the best cut I've ever heard from him. There's some good stuff on IV, and World Anthem.Isn't he the one that woke up at age 16, never playing a guitar before, and was suddenly as good as Hendrix, LOL?
Dry Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 About 10 years ago my band had the great privlege to opened up for them and also play after them in Peoria. Frank Marino and the band stuck around the whole night and partyed. They were awesome live! I met and talked with all of them.Where is he now?
