Stupid wiring question: where do I put the extra ground lead?

I got Bizzwriter's/Hamerhead's/everone on the board has owned it/etc 1981 Special today. Super light and easy to play. And it needs pickups.

I'm going to keep an eye open for some period DiMarzios, but until then I'm going to pop in a pair of Ibanez Axis pickups as they were handy, cheap, and sound good in Joe Satriani guitars. Now... the bridge and neck pickup each have a black, a white, and a red lead.

So... can anyone refer me to a diagram or photo? Is it black wire to the last tab on the volume pot (last if you look at ground, tab, tab) and the white soldered to the body of the pot for each? What do I do with that damn red wire?

I've swapped pickups before but always removed the ones that were in there first and took notes! Thanks for all help, everyone.

Try some sites like Guitar-nuts or even the SD and Dimarzio sites for wiring diagrams. There are plenty out there (some with cool variations).

I'll have some hummers for sale soon; possibly Gibson Ceramics, Burstbuckers and BB pros, Rio Grande BBQ, Seth Lover, SD Livewire Metal actives (w/ pots/battery clips etc.).

you probably want black on the volume pot, red on ground, and leave the white unconnected. If you ground the white it would split the coils, at least if the chart above is right. The chart has "bare" and not "black" though so who knows.
