'91 Sunburst Stock Pickups

Hi, did the '91 era Sunbursts come with the same '59 neck/JB bridge as the Special FM's did later on? Also, does anyone know if the only difference between the regular JB and and the TB4 is the pole spacing, all else being equal in construction and sound? That's the way I understand it at the SD site.

I found that my '91 Sunburst has what appears to be a newer TB4 in the bridge position and is not as stock as I assumed.

Yes, JB and a 59 that was what was in mine. The TB4 though will line up the poles perfectly with the TOM. A pretty damn good pup IHMO. I have one in my 81 Flying V and it sounds great.

Your post prompted me to check on something that I forgot about. A while back I was looking for this combo of pickups to put into my then newly acquired (and now sold) '96 Special FM. At that time I actually purchased two sets, one from a member of this forum and another from an eBay seller. The set from e-bay were pulled from a '93 Special or Studio which was perfect for my application at the time and remain in the Special FM. But, because I was committed to the set purchased here I just took them anyway, tucked them away and promptly forgot about them. Until your reply. So I checked the attic and my old emails and the set I have are actually pulled from his a '91 Sunburst Archtop...talk about stars aligning. So my issue is solved and I now have a couple other extra pickups to tuck away for the next great cosmic convergence, or sale whichever comes first.

i dont mean to throw a wrench in your project here, but i just wanted to add that in the artist that i just acquired, it has 2 59's. I was extremely impressed with the warmth AND guts that the 59 has in the bridge position.

seriously altered my opinoin of my other artist and studio that has the JB/59 combo......i have not been able to put it down, the tone has become addictive

No problem at all, I used what I had and fro now that works fine. The dual '59 makes sense though. I think the '59 is about half the output of the JB as I recall so it's a tamer pair. When I received the Special FM it had two Schaller Golden 50 pickups which were both about the same measurement and about the same as a '59 and it sounded just fine as well. I currently prefer a little hotter bridge pickup but could always easily make the switch.
