I leaned the Lydian Mode

I know. That's so stupid, I even laugh at myself. I'm actually familiar with modes and use a few different ones (on purpose, and on accident) once in a while. Anybody here have any favorite types of uses for it? I hope there are some jazz heads here - gotta love those guys. Once again, it's a bit of a stupid question but would just like to know some honest opinions - along with the flaming, too.

I'm in a Monday mood.

Oh, and had another fun gig on Friday. The last band (darn 3-band show) flaked out so we got back up and did a 5-song encore. Really had a good time. Damn, my Hamer Studio just cooks! It's nice when you enjoy your gear.

The Lydian will give you a nice, major II chord in a progression. Kind of nice. Also, it will give you a vii minor chord in a progression. Also, it will give you a nice, bV note in the major pentatonic scale.

Yeah it's definately a cool one.

I used to LOVE how it sounded over an open EMajor chord. A descending run in the lower register that ends on the low E string just sounds fat.

Mixolydian is one my old favories as well. Now a days I don't really practice submitting all the modes and stuff to memory like I used to. I remember it really helped out with my improvization.

I know the shapes now more thatn the actual names. My very first guitar teacher was having me learn a key a week for a while.....now I kind of just remember the shapes. ;)

I notice that the Lydian sounds great over minor chords but it doesn't have a minor third, which I thought was interesting (I'm a geek).

A while back, when I was a little more up on my modes I jammed with a local band. They played a Steely Dan tune and I felt my way through the solo, trying the modes that sounded good. Afterwards, the keyboard player looked at me and said, "Man, it was Larry Carlton who played that solo for them!" I guess he was impressed I could tread my way through it. Go figure, I fooled him.
