Advice On A Music Player/Service For My 7 Year Old

So, my boy loves his iPod (old, mini) but we're having trouble with a dedicated "home base", purchase transfers, etc. Basically, I want him to have a personal, portable music player that is completely self-contained. I'd rather not spend money on a player and a service like Rhapsody for a 7-year old, but that's the only option that I know for something like this. Any advice, options, suggestions appreciated.

iPod and iTunes. the integration really is seamless. I think you can get points at most grocery stores these days, and then put them into your iTunes account. I haven't actually been purchasing music through iTunes but they have a huge selection, and again, the integration is seamless.

You can create him his own itunes account without adding a credit card, add money with your credit card using your account using the built in gifting options of itunes.

On your computer just create him his own account so that he has his own itunes library. You can still authorize any songs purchased on your itunes account and put them in his itunes library.
