pick up question on 1982 special

Hi.

i bought my 82 special with what was described as "gibson pick ups from a 1971 SG"

the pick ups had nickle covers and after taking a look at the bases it looked to me that they were added afterwards. i took the nickle covers off and had a look at the bobbins, the front pick up has an exposed coil, the drummer in my band says they have been opened at some stage. the rear pick up has black tape over the bobbins as per usual. both pick ups look like gibson pick ups with the patient number stamped on the base and both measure at around 7,4K. the neck pick up with the exposed bobbin is slightly hotter than the bridge pick up.

the guitar sounds amazing, is it possible that these pick ups could be some of the gibson stock Larry Dimazio rewound for hamer?

its the guitar in my avatar, i have high res photos of the bobbins but cant seem to get them to show up.

just as an asisde, i bought the Hamer with the hang tags and original case with slightly sticky finish. i rubbed the guitar down with Brasso metal cleaner and its come up looking new. i reckon the guitar had been "cared" for by an owner who must have rubbed some kind of product over the finish that had built up over the years and stuck to the case fur. its amazing that after an hour with metal polish the guitar looks MINT!

No it is not possible.

That is the most over-hyped Hamer myth that exists. I own one of the last (if not THE last) Hamer that had a Dimarzio-rewound Gibson pickup in it and mine is one of the first ten or eleven Hamer guitars made (from early 1976). The story about the mystic box of pickups is an oft-retold bit of folklore that unscrupulous (or just plain stupid) guitar dealers push to sell a guitar. Even if such a stock was used, it would've been long gone before the first Sunburst was even thought about.

The story about the mystic box of pickups is an oft-retold bit of folklore...

Told by Jol himself.
