Mesa Boogie Studio Pre-amp Gurus

Question

Posted

This seems a common problem on the MesaBoogie Studio Pre-map - once warmed up Channel/Output B starts to drop out as if it is going into Standby whilst A is still full strength. I don't often want Channel B so I don't worry.

I have been messing with it today and found that the effects loop level switch on the back seems to be to blame - a good few hearty switchings and B is back. I don't use the loop by the way.

But why? That controls the output of the 'send' or the load for the 'returns'? Is it even possible that this switch is to blame?

I don't know what the answer is, but a LOT of Mesa "cutting in and cutting out" problems are solved by replacing the effect loop jacks or inserting a patch cord into the loop.

As above ^^^

Squirt some contact cleaner into the jack sockets for the send and return (with the amp turned off and unplugged of course) and work an old jack plug in and out a few times.

This should clean any tarnish from the make and break connections in the sockets and might help.

Looks like a cap is acting up. Very interesting that the line level switch kicks it back in could be a minor connection issue- give the board a once over. Doesn't sound like LDR failure although you never know. Those little bastards are almost 95% responsible for anything going wrong with the studio or quad pre's. Check it out with mesa people. Let me know what it comes down to. Killer piece of kit so try to get her repaired. Good luck mate.
