  1. I never buy based on the look of a guitar. Having said that I have a couple of nice flame tops on my L.P. and on a couple of Hamers but I don't have them because they look good. TBH I was put off a lot of flame/curly tops when the photoflame thing happened and it was hard to tell if it was a real top or just painted on.
  2. Congratulations on the end to an epic quest. A real beauty, it must sound and play really well, guitars with that sort of wear have usually been played a lot plus you wont have to be worried about taking to a gig.
  3. Nice case. The problem with cases designed for L.P's is they're too deep for the slim-bodied Sunbursts and need adjustment to the neck support (as you mention) or the neck will not lay flat and the case lid will hit it and push it down as the lid closes, not ideal. Seems to be a problem with a lot of Gibson cases as I had the same issue with a couple of Gibson Flying V case's.
  4. $90 bucks Ex P&P, it's not going to get any cheaper than this for a new case. If I had a bit more space I'd be tempted to buy one as a spare. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hamer-Guitar-Case/331395412431?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D27538%26meid%3D6c2fd69672744541b449aa0604ea2d0a%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D11353%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D331416930314&rt=nc
  5. Check the For sale section there's a link there to someone selling new Hamer cases that would be perfect.
  6. Really hard to tell but I would say the tuners are too new, the TRC is not laminated, the bridge should be a bad ass (but I wouldn't swear to it) and the S/N looks like the wrong font (have to check more closely) and is it a coincidence that the SN starts with 79. It looks more like it was made in 1989 or 99, could it have been mis-numbered as it came off the line or an employees guitar ? Do you have a link to the thread on the B.C Rich site please ?
  7. Looks real enough to me. Maybe he thinks it'll make more money than a Gibson or that it will encourage bargain hunters to bid thinking they know something the seller doesn't..
  8. Got to say I prefer the way it hangs with button on the horn at the moment (and I think it looks better there) but I still haven't made my mind up totally on having a Burst or a colour (White or Black) yet. Probably just going to go with the flow man.....................
  9. OK just did a side by side comparison as one of my Standards has the button in the back of the neck and the other is on the top horn, the same strap was used for both. The guitar with the button on the top horn does tend to neck dive a little more than the Standard Standard (button on the back of the neck), it's not exactly a plummet to the floor though just a slight downwards movement (and it actually drops into a good playing position for me so this will depend a lot on where you like to wear your guitar). Although the button on the back doesn't dive as much (if any) it does makes the top of the guitar fall away from you (which the button on the horn does not do) so there is a trade off. The "fall away" could also be due to the Dunlop Straplocks making to the distance the strap is away from the guitar back greater but I could also be talking a load of Sh1t as usual.
  10. There is one advantage to having the strap button on the body/horn if you use straplocks then you can interchange the straps easily otherwise you need different straps for different guitars due to the twist the strap has to make to attach on the back of the neck. Not sure if it affects the balance in any way I'll check and report back. Wherever you put it make sure it has a strap locking device of some sort, Mike, you should list them as an option if You're not fitting them as standard.
  11. I'm old enough to remember when Dimarzio started selling replacement pickups in the 70's and in my yoof went through a phase of checking out what was available, (at that time I think I had an Ibanez L.P. Copy) PAF and Superdistortion models were about it at the time and the difference between them and stock P/U's was easily discernible. Also had an old Strat (not sure how old it was but it was a 4 bolt neck) I swapped out the "nasty old" pick ups for a set of Dimarzio SDS1 (?). I recall taking the covers off the old PU's and looking at the coils which (to my eyes then) seemed to only have been partly wound and very sloppily at that and thinking should I throw them in the bin or not and gave them to a friend to play with. Where's the face palm emoticon............. Next guitar was a 77 L.P. Deluxe Goldtop and Seymour Duncan came along so I had one of the first sets of his p/u's to arrive in the U.K. a PAF in the bridge (or was it called a pearly gates) and a JB (Jeff Beck model) in the neck that was a great combination the difference between the stock minibuckers was night and day but the differences between the Dimarzios and the S.D's were not so obvious to my ears and this is (more or less) where I stopped swapping (until recently). It depends on the guitar too, one of the Standards is un-molested electronics wise and I'm happy with the way it sounds with the stock Dimarzios, I can't ever see that getting any surgery any time soon, same for the 78 Sunbursts. 2 of my V's have stock pickups, T tops in the 75 which sound just as they should and (allegedly) Tim Shaws in the 85 which sound un-believeably good. However the daily driver Standard had a set of Super distortions in it when I got it so I don't mind fiddling with that (I swapped the bridge p/u straight out for a Lollar Imperial high wind as I'm not a fan of the Superdistortion) and I just popped a set of JB Gregwinds in there (thanks Currypowder) and replaced the volume pots with push push pots (thanks Murkat) so I can tap the coils, not had chance to crank it up yet but it sounds great through the practice amp at home in Humbucking or Single coil mode. The Imperial will be going into the 79 Sunburst later today along with another Imperial as this also had a P/U swap by a previous owner and I'd rather they were in a guitar than just sitting in a drawer, it will also get a set of push/push pots to split the coils.. This is probably the first time I've had the inclination to do this in 20 Years and I think some of it is because I'm in a position where If I don't like the sound I can just grab a different one from the stash whereas when I was young I didn't have so many guitars and couldn't chop and change easily if I wanted to try and improve the "tone" so I had to hope that changing P/U's would be enough. ETA: It wil be interesting to check out these guitars side by side now and have a chance to hear the differences between them in "real time". I ticked the rarely box as I generally keep the stock pickups in my guitars now but I will buy pickups if I see something interesting at a good price with a mind to future fiddling.
  12. ^^What he said. So glad I don't need guitars with trems/shredders. Anyone here score this ?
  13. They are...that's how it was when i purchased it. I even have the case candy that came with it. Mind you, that was just a sticker... I knew the owner of the shop who sold it so I am positive I am the 1st owner. (The shop closed several years ago, the owner deceased). That shop had the dealership. As far as I know only 2 Hamers were sold in/around my town prior to 1980. This one and a sunburst dotneck. The dotneck did have different knobs though. Maybe it has to do with the fact that mine has crown inlays and bindings, i.e is a more expensive one? I think Chris was answering Hanspanzers earlier question. Your knobs look like the originals to me Darksoul. P.S. If you ever want to part with it let me know.
  14. Welcome Darksoul24. Very nice 78 you have there. If you're the original owner then we need more details and bigger pics please. Is this your only Hamer or do you have more ? If you hang here long enough it's very difficult to resist getting more so hide your wallet.
  15. Early long headstock 78. Nice one. Bullseye Grovers appear from time to time but plain backed ones are easy to find. Place a wanted ad in the for sale section here for a 78 sustain block bridge, this is the best place to look for one or a good alternative.
  16. Congratulations. I would let the seller know you're not happy and see if you can come to some agreement and He gives you some money back so you can get it fixed.
  17. If the price goes up too much or import hassles put you off then Monte has a nice sunburst Sunburst already in the E.U. for sale in the FS section. http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/topic/66587-price-drop-1980-dark-burst-special-my-personal-polka-dot-experience/
  18. Not sure if that's correct for old guitars. I've brought a few into the U.K. which should have the same import regulations as any E.U. country with no problems and I'm pretty sure one of them had a Brazilian board.
  19. The one you linked to does not have the original Bridge P/U, it looks like a Super distortion to me as it has hex pole pieces. It is in bloody good condition though and has a nice top (very similar to my 79 B&C). If that went for over £2000 ($3300 to you colonials) then your 78 was a bargain indeed regardless of its non original parts, at least it hasn't been Kahlered or got extra holes all over the top for stupid switches. Genuine Hamer cases pop up for sale occasionally for reasonable money.
  20. Welcome and congratulations on your new guitar. I think you did ok, not a bargain price but not over the top either and you could be waiting a long time for another one to come along. They're seriously undervalued IMO, this is a vintage guitar, 36 years old and quite rare to see over this side of the pond A 78 L.P. would cost around double this price and you'd have to be Mr Lucky to buy one un-played and it be a good one. BTW. Make sure it's packed well inside the L.P. case as it's likely a L.P. case will be a little too big for a Sunburst.
