No serial number on 1980 special

Hello,

I'm interested in buying a white 1980 special in germany. There is no serial number on the guitar.

Can it be a pre series?

Has anyone heard of this?

No.

It should be a black number on a white background and it could be very faint. Refinish is by far the most likely reason for absence.

They usually numbered prototypes (small p) with the exception of the first four Sunbursts

I wondered about that one a few times. too. I think it's a refin, which COULD mean that there was a repair - possibly to the neck - before. But who knows...

Yes, I was. Headstock and bridge indicate that it is a 1981 or later.

I also think it's repainted.

If it is a re-fin at least it looks like it was done well.

There's an interesting bit of checking at the rear of the headstock.

If it's the same one I think then it's been for sale for some time.
