grr.... amp "noise"

more like "whoosh" really,

so I have been going direct with my PodHD , but we have a show Friday, and they asked me to be "live" on stage for some extra antics with sit-in singers. OK, cool. I fire up my amp that I was going to use, a British Gibson GA RV15, nuthin' special, but usually problem free. It sounds like a box fan, it is some kind of hissing, gets louder with the vol control, and is just distractingly loud. Gonna do some tube swapping tonight, but I think I did that a couple months ago and it has really just been sitting, so I don't think that is the culprit. I don't know how old it is, but does that sound like a cap job kind o' fix?

Nah,

new TAD tubes all around, even played "musical chairs" with some tubes I have layin around. I used my Black Pearl for the gig, and it was more than enough, so I can sit on this one until I get around to have it looked at/serviced. it's older, prolly could use some attention.

If the amp's been sitting up for a while, you might try cleaning the tube sockets.

Take contact cleaner, spray the pins of an old tube, insert and remove it a few times in each socket. Might just do the trick. Certainly worth a try.

Might as well hit the pots while the De-Oxit is out, what, all 3 of them? +1 on the sockets as well. Dirt is persistent and sneaky stuff!

Did you flip all the switches and works all the knobs and jacks a bit, too? I think the thing they hate the most is just sitting unused......or maybe out in the rain is worse, but.......?

Sorry to hear it isn't being reliable.Could be a cap issue after sitting for years and years.

Ta'dah!

I did just that last night, deoxit in all three pots, two switches(bright & pent/triode) and did a thorough clean of the tube sockets and it's purring like a kitten. A really loud grumpy pissed-off kitten ;)

I had forgotten how this amp rips! and it makes a fantastic Jazz amp, gets a killer Grant Green/Kenny Burrell Vibe.
