Ting Ho Dung Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Brandon has come home for the Holidays full of new information and theory, etc. He's been trying to figure out if he was right on one chord. He thought it was an Am add 9 an Fm add 9 because it had a G and a G# (Ab?). I found this site and it confirmed that he was correct. Try it out. It also gives you the notes in a scale.http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~scottd/chords_and_scales/music.html
Bobby Marshall Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Always build chords root third fifth seventh ninth etc.The Fm add 9 could also be named Fm sus2 as they have the same notes.F Ab C Eb G - the fifth C in this case can routinely be left out by guitarist or keyboardist. Even the root can be left out. You don't have to play all the notes to imply the chord. Knowing why a chord fits (by ear or by theory) is the key so you can substitute chords when you are playing with another guitarist and/or a keyboardist or just trying to be jazzy.
