In-ear issues

Question

Have noticed an very annoying reoccurring problem with my in-ear monitor-

With this model of Audio Technica (M2) you can control the volume and mix of 2 separate signals using the M2R stereo bodypack receiver. I run a direct out from my amp to the AT going to one channel on the transmitter. I run a 2nd line from the board's aux out mix of the band into the other input/channel. That way I can tweak the level of either on my receiver.

Here's the problem- when I switch from passive to active equipped guitars, the resultant spike in output causes the AT M2 to clip the signal (supposedly sparing me a burst ear drum or hearing damage) but the degradation or reduction of signal causes the entire signal from the guitar to crap out or become so crackly and distorted that it is of no use.

My initial thoughts were that it was the driver in the one bud (Alien Ears) but I switched the input order and it happens in both buds. And after shutting the system off for a break, I've come back to it working fine.

Seems to be an inability to adapt to the change in out put signal of the guitars.

Anyone have insights on this or how to fix?

I don't think the direct out signal on a JVM can be modified without modifying the overall volume.

would running the direct out from the amp to the mixer first & out another send to the body pack work? or mic the amp just for a gtr send to you ?

Not sure I follow.

Body pack doesn't have an input, save for earphone jack.

I meant reciever sorry , one channel from main monitor mix one from the mixer sending your guitar ( use the board to knock down the signal level of you guitar) so your hot guitar doesnt over driver the compressor ( or what ever is distorting ) then adjust your mix for each guitar ??edited to say transmitter not reciever doh !

I use the Carvin one, what I had to do was get all my level "sends" pretty flat. I used a little mixer with a led "level" meter and dialed in all my patches and guitar outputs to be pretty close to the same. then I dialed back the softer ones and bumped up the hotter ones to comfort. but getting a even send helped me design my patches better. if your levels are pre-fader, your level will be constant in the in-ears and the sound person can bump you in the house without buggering your IEM's. It has taken the better part of a year for me to get used to being "amp-less" on stage, and I haven't been convinced it's better, but it is what they wanna do.

I run my transmitter in Stereo, and my belt pack in mono.

I run one signal straight from my POD HD to the transmitter, and the other signal from the board to the transmitter. That way I can "blend" between just my signal, and the rest of the band signal with the R/L pan on the belt pack. That has helped me get a good mix in my ears.

too many mixers :)
