Hamer Special or Studio with Trem?

therefore

Question

Posted

So what's the deal with short scale guitars rarely having trems on them? I've seen a few photos of Specials and Studios with them but they seem very rare. Never seen one for sale. Is this something I should look to have installed myself or? A guitar tech mentioned that mahogany necks (vs maple for longer scale) may be part of the technical reason, but there seem to be exceptions.

My dream setup right now is a Special or Studio with trem that can be setup really low so I can hold in in my hand while playing and both dive and pull up - vs grabbing and yanking.

Any thoughts? Thank in advance.

Plenty of Sunbursts/Archtops from the early nineties with Floyds, but maple necks.

All the Hamer sustain-block trems came on guitars with chunky mahogany necks - never a problem with these.

I have a Kahlered Phantom GT with a very slim mahogany neck - again no problem.

Blame Leo Fender - longer-scale, maple neck = trem. It's just a tradition for the most part. Bigsbys on Gibsons just didn't enter the popular psyche in the same way.

well, remember that historically, Gibson guitars did not have trems, or if they did they were things like bigsbys. Fender scale guitars were the ones with the trems, and floyd rose systems and the like were first designed for them. Back in the day hardcore whammy action was mostly the province of 25.5 scale guitars, though there are many notable exceptions. If you look out there now, you will still see that across the marketplace, trems are more often than not on 25.5 scale guitars.

Yes, I do have your Phantom GT, but that has a maple neck; it is another with the mahogany neck.

Superior knowledge? More like a head full of worthless trivia.
