The Phantom I just got out of the 4-3-2-1 club, courtesy of BruceM is either the bee's pajamas or the cat's knees, I'm not sure which. There's a lot to like about this guitar.
BUT
It's bright. Very bright. Piercing, even. Moreso on the humbucker but the single-coil even sounds very bright, like a bridge-position Strat through a Deluxe with the bright switch on and the treble way up. I like the levels balance between the single coil and the humbucker and with the tone control rolled well back, it's very nice sounding. But it leaves me in a conundrum that, for the moment, centers around the pots. As you know, the thing has a single-coil and a humbucker in the same housing. An inspection of the control room appears to have a conventional wiring scheme : pickups->switch->vol->tone-> outta here.
So, does anybody know what the stock pot value was for one of these? The original Hamer-branded pots are in it. Either way (250K or 500K), it would seem to be a compromise. Assuming it is the typical Hamer 450K or so pot, a change to a 250K might tame this thing a little. But I don't want to go digging and de-soldering for nothing. the markings on the pot don't indicate a value or taper that I can see.
BTW, Bruce mentioned it sounded better with a Phat Cat, but that kind of defeats the point of it for me. The current (maybe stock, who knows?) humbucker shows a DC resistance of about 8.1Kohn and, as mentioned, is a nice balance with the single-coil, so I'd rather not mess with it if I don't need to.
