duaneallen Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I just got my first Hamer! It is a jazzburst Newport Pro with crown inlays. What a sweet guitar. It plays great and the workmanship is amazing. I basically bought it for playing jazz. The only thing is that it sounds a little bit bright for jazz. I'm wondering if its the Seth Lover pickups or are these guitars just bright. Has anybody out there have one of these guitars and swapped out the pickups for other humbuckers? What were the results? Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.
Travis Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I don't have a Newport but I do have some experience with the Seth Lovers. Normally, those are not bright pickups. The A2 magnets and vintage PAF spec construction keep them pretty smooth and creamy. In fact, if a guitar was already bright and the owner wanted a PAF style pickup to smooth it up a bit, I would recommend a Seth Lover. I'm curious to hear what others chime in with, though.
jwhitcomb3 Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Congrats on your new Hamer! Sounds sweet.I generally keep the tone control on my Newport on 6. The control is voiced so well that I can dial in all kinds of sounds, but I use 6 as a starting point. Roll it back to 2 for jazzier stuff, crank it up to 10 for a bit more spank.-Jonathan
straightblues Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I would agree with the others. That is the way the tone controls are set up. I usually run my Newport with Phat Cats around 4 on the tone knob. With the tone rolled down to 4 is it still too bright???
