Opinions on the JBL MR 935 speakers...

My singer says he has a line on a pair of these for a decent price. I don't know anything about these and was wondering if anyone here knew anything about them. They are the JBL MR 935 speakers and I can't find diddly sqat about them. the only thing I found was a pair on E-bay for a BIN of $800 and no bids. His seller wants $650 for his and they are in nice condition. The bonus is that they are local so we wont have to do the shipping thing. What say the audio experts?

Rob, my only experience is as a listener. A local trio and sometimes quartet, consisting of acoustic guitar, numerous and varied percussion instruments, bass, flutes, and vocals uses them for any and all of their gigs that aren't big enough to warrant a hired concert sound system. In other words, about 90% of their gigs.

They always sound very natural and unforced, the full range comes through well. I don't imagine they'd 'throw' all that well, but what they do put out sounds very very good. They use an ancient Soundcraft mixer (NOT Spirit, etc.) and an old Belles hi-fi power amp, AKG mikes for the most part, Fishman guitar electronics (the external preamp/mixer dealie) and Yamaha stand-mounted mini-monitors.

When they get going, you pretty much forget the PA. That's high praise for a sound system in my book.

Actually, I use the MR922. The MR925 is the bigger version of what I have.

The 935 is a large, 3 way speaker. From the description, I'd be surprised if they were pole mountable.

Frankly, these may be bigger and heavier than you want. But they'd be awesome. :-)

I am not sure about the stand mounting issue...but would/should this be a deal killer?

I don't know. For some reason, the typical method is putting smaller speakers on pole stands. This gets the sound up to ear level, but is that really a good thing? Maybe it helps with more directional high end?

Buy 'em and put your Yamahas on top!

If they're stand mountable, there's no issue. But they will be pretty heavy to lift up on the stand!

I use a pair of nice heavy duty Ultimate speaker stands.
