Crack in ebony fretboard

Spike

Question

Posted

I pulled my '81 Dean Z out of its case to restring it and clean the fretboard, only to discover a crack in the fretboard.
So, can a good repair shop fill the the crack or am I looking at a more extensive repair?

Not sure what the spot by the nut between the E and A strings is but whatever it is, it was done before I ever owned the guitar.

TIA for any advice on  this.

Get a piece of ebony from either a local guitar shop "look for a cheap tuning peg button or acoustic bridge pin" or maybe they'll have a broken bridge piece or similar or a local wood workers store may have a remnant piece laying around... so you can make ebony saw dust, then use a glue perhaps  a "CA glue"... mask off area, fill crack with saw dust, drop glue, wait then sand... (you can use a razor blade to level surface) repeat if saw dust sinks... to answer your question, any competent shop can repair issue... lots of YouTube videos showing repairs..  Good luck & Live long 🖖👽

Great. Thanks!

And BTW, HUGE  congrats on the Hamer Standard you have coming your way. That's what made me pull out the Dean Z in the first place. (A poor man's...er...woman's Hamer). Be sure to post some pics when it arrives. Sound clips would be welcome too.

Thanks again!

Got the same thing on my Guild X79. A few months of regular humidating the fretboard with lemon oil made it i bit less visible. Tho it doesn’t affect sound or playability.
