Hamer 1987 Chaparral Bass

Ham Rex

Question

Posted

Hello:

Is there anyone that could shed some knowledge on this overpriced 1987 Hamer Chapparal my wife purchased from GC for my B-Day next week? Yes I'm effing old reLaX.

It's a 1987 Chaparral Bass SN 717972. It has Ebony fretboard, bound flat top (maple topped?) Passive OBL P-Bass, and an OBL Humbucker.

It was sold in 2004 from Talk Bass (wish she paid that money!!!)

https://www.talkbass.com/threads/1987-hamer-chaparral-4-string-bass.1231445/

It sat for 20 years... how do I know or at least think I know? The same set of strings are on it.

I tuned it up and what an awesome sound.

My main questions are,

Is it a one off as I haven't seen this pickup configuration on any other Hamer Bases for sale, also ebony instead of rosewood and bound maple top?

The book says Hamer made Chaparral basses starting in 1987 but my limited knowledge and search haven't found anything like it. In the book Steve Matthes submitted a picture of a Midnight Pearl Metallic (beautiful) with the binding and same pickup configuration. I love the Max on the same page.

Any info would be appreciated.

I know $350.00 is the best price HFC members would pay. It sat for 20 years with no use. What might it be worth? Looks exactly like it did in TalkBass.

If I change strings I'll remove the humbucker and see if there are two different woods.

Thanks for your time and effort.

Martin

They did a run of those in ‘87 - not sure if it was for a specific dealer or if they just built them.  All had ebony boards and bound tops, and I believe they all shipped with OBL pickups like yours.  They came in Candy Apple Red, Black, Midnight Blue Metallic and White with black binding.  There may have been some other variations, and there were several done in each color, but somebody would have to check the logbooks for a more accurate count.
