larry Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 I'm curious as to how high everyone keeps their strings. My electric is a Hamer Newport Pro. Been recently playing mostly on my Taylor acoustic 514ce and when I switch back to play my Hamer, the strings almost seem too low. I'm sure much of that is because of the contrast to the acoustic. But it led me to be curious about the height that everyone prefers on their electrics.
proxmax Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 at my calis i have 1.3 - 1.6 mm at the 12th fret.at the pauls i have 1.5 - 1.8mm.
Uncle Thor's Hamer Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Low. I adjust the bridge height so that there is no buzz when playing the upper frets moderately hard. The truss rod is adjusted to just a slight gap at the 6th fret when capoed at both the 1st and 14th frets. The nut slots have been filed so that there is nearly zero clearance above the 1st fret when capoed at the 3rd fret. You can't get away with this if the neck or frets have any twist/warp such as you'd find on a lesser quality guitar. There isn't any fret buzz unless playing aggressive power chords.
Steve Haynie Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 My strings are a little high, but not terribly high. There is a point where the tone becomes a little more full as you raise the string height.

Maybe it's from playing acoustic a lot.
GaryT Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 I have a few electrics that have great action. I actually raise the action a bit so I could get under for bends without a problem.
