Satch an nice music

The new Satch CD arrived today. I've had pre-ordered and received a signed booklet with the CD. Sigs are always a gentle thing.

Music is not ground braking, but solid. I had not been happy with the last recordings. This one sounds more gentle. I've just given it a 2nd run...

Anyone gave it a run too?

Yep - a couple run throughs. Happy with it, although I need to listen more closely.

If you get a chance and the band doesn't change, this would be an excellent tour to see him on - the band is a monster. Mike Keneally (he did keys on the album and last tour and is apparently going to play guitar on this tour), Bryan Beller on bass, and Marco Minneman on drums. 2/3 of The Aristocrats, 1/2 of Dethklok, two guys who played for Vai, one who played for Zappa, one who played for Steven Wilson.

I listened to most of it when it was available for streaming via Microsoft's listening booth a week or two back. While my expectations were pretty low, I thought the first few tunes were pretty good, in the end the rhythm section kills it for me. I understand the concept of keeping the groove and providing a basic foundation for a song but with Satch it's always so basic and generic, live shows seem to be the same. I mean Double Trouble didn't have in trouble staying in the pocket and grooving but it never sounded so basic and generic as it does with Satch. Doesn't seem to matter who he is playing with, it's as if they have been instructed to keep it as basic as possible with no chance of showing any chops. While this may be plausible for vocal or mainstream music, I don't feel it does Instrumental Rock music any justice. Unless it serves to make him look even more impressive with the drastic contrast. (He used to be one of my favorites)
