Could the experts enlighten me on what the function of a cathode follower tube is in an amp?

Specifically for me V2 in a Freedman amp, but I believe it is a modified Marshall circuit so should be common usage

Heck if I know, but ChatGPT says:

A cathode follower tube in a guitar amplifier serves several important functions, mainly related to signal handling and impedance matching. Here’s a breakdown of its role:

1. **Impedance Buffer:** The cathode follower circuit has a high input impedance and a low output impedance. This makes it an excellent buffer stage that prevents the signal from being affected by the impedance of the components or stages that follow it. This is crucial for preserving the integrity of the signal and ensuring that the following stages receive a consistent signal.

2. **Signal Coupling:** It helps in coupling signals between different stages of the amplifier. Because of its low output impedance, it can effectively drive the next stage, whether that’s a tone control circuit, another amplification stage, or a power amp section.

3. **Minimizing Signal Loss:** By providing a low output impedance, the cathode follower minimizes signal loss and potential degradation that might occur if the signal had to drive a lower impedance load directly.

4. **Improving Stability:** In some cases, using a cathode follower can help in stabilizing the overall circuit by isolating different stages of the amplifier. This isolation can be important for reducing interaction between stages that could lead to unwanted distortion or instability.

In a guitar amplifier, these functions contribute to a cleaner, more reliable amplification of the guitar signal, allowing the amplifier to maintain signal quality and achieve a desired tonal character.

Cathode followers are pretty standard in Marshall circuits, and usually are right before the EQ, like a buffer. The signal path, instead of coming off the plate (anode), comes off the cathode.

The primary purpose of the Cathode Follower is to prevent the tone stack from loading down the high impedance guitar signal coming off V2A's plate. The Cathode Follower supplies a low impedance signal to the tone stack to keep the tone controls from affecting the amp's output volume too much.

They are also often used before an effects loop. The original Mesa Boogie Solo Head Dual Rectifiers utilizes both: one before the channel EQ, and one to drive the effects loop.

You definitely want a sturdy tube for a cathode follower position, as many makers like to run the tubes over spec with regards to cathode to heater voltage, and also often run the plate way up there as well.
