Trade Speakers anyone?

I have a like-new 16ohm Celestion G12T75. I need an 8ohm speaker. I'll trade plus some cash for your shipping/trouble. G12T75, Wizard, V30, Governer, Swamp Thang, etc...

Thanks for the offer bro, but this is for my main amp. It needs to be a "good" speaker.

The problem is, I want to use an 8 ohm extension cab. And as I understand it, I shouldn't run a 16 ohm internal speaker AND an 8 ohm external together. Two 8 ohm loads will work though - at 4 ohms. Make sense? ;)

Doesn't make sense.

First of all, the Carvin British speakers are GOOD speakers.

Second of all, I don't completely understand what you're chasing, because you're listing speakers that are all over the place, tone wise. T75s have more sizzle and V30s have more honk, for example. That Carvin is a LOT closer to the character of your current celestion than a Vintage 30.

And, most important, there's no valid reason you can't run a 16ohm an an 8ohm load in parallel.

If you run 8 and 16 in parallel, you get slightly over 5ohms load. This is WELL within tolerance. Hell, depending on the speakers, you could easily end up an ohm or two off in either direction, and that doesn't even take into account the frequency dependence of voice coil impedance. As such, I suggest you try it with your current speakers and see if it sounds good to you. Save some cash and hassle if it does, and nothing will get hurt making the test. Of course, If someone wants to straight swap you for an 8-ohm t75, that's a different story.

If it doesn't sound perfect to you, find a replacement speaker based on what you think you can add to the tone. Want more honky midrange? Shoot for a V30 or equivalent. More bottom end character? Try one of the H30 equivalents, etc.

Sorry for hijacking your for trade post.

Don't sweat the thread hijack.

I've used Carvin British speakers. I've even A/B'd them with T75's. They aren't that good. Very lifeless. Not as loud either. YMMV

Now let me see if I understand this. You're saying it's OK to run an 8 ohm and 16 ohm load together? Should I set the impedence switch to 4ohms then? I thought that was bad for the tranformers or something like that. ;)

Might of been just the setup I was using at the time but I didn't like the Carvin British Series speakers myself. Not that they're "bad" speakers just wasn't my cup of tea. I love my Zinky head but had to swap out the Zinky speakers that many ppl rave over. I replaced them with a Celestion V30 and T75 mix and it sounds great like that to me. YMMV.

NEVERMIND ;)

I just got off the phone with the amp company and they said it is no problem to run a 5+ ohm load (16 ohm external cab with 8 ohm internal speaker). I just need to switch the amp's output impedence to 4 ohms.

Cool! Learn something new everyday!
