DavidE Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 I'm getting a dog ear P90 from BadgerDave for my Korina Jr. The Fralin measures 7.89 ohms on his digital multi-meter. How do you think this will compare to the stock pickup?

How do you think this will compare to the stock pickup? The stock pickup (Seymour Duncan) has 13 letters vice 6 (Fralin). I would expect the Fralin to be much less pronounced.

Jack C Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 I wouldn't expect the new pickup to sound any tougher or ballsier. I mean "Seymour" isn't a very tough name, but "Lindy" is no better. If you really want a manly pickup, you might want to try something from Bill Lawrance or Larry Dimarzio.
Guest pirateflynn Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 The black covered version will sound darker whereas a cream colored one will sound..creamier.
Jack C Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 One other thing to consider: I believe the stock Duncan really is a soapbar under a dogear cover, while the Fralin is probably a true dogear. With that being the case, I would expect the soapbar to sound more clean and the dogear to be a little more ruff.
straightblues Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 Think about it like the difference between a Seth Lover and a Super Distortion pickup. They are both humbuckers but they aren't the same. The Lindy will sound much different. It will sound cleaner at all volumes. At 5 or 6 on the guitar volume it will be almost strat like. At 10 it will get the nice P90 grind instead of the way distorted tones of the high output stock Duncans. It will allow you to turn up your amp a bit more and get more natural overdrive from the amp rather than having the front end of the amp overloaded by a hot pickup. The Fralin will also have a brighter overal tone. All in all, it will sound like a real vintage Gibson P90 rather than the stock hot Duncan that looks like a P90 but doesn't sound like one.

How DARE you give me a useful answer????That's what I thought and that's why I want it.

riffpowers Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 I find that the dogear on my korina Jr has a bit more bark and growl to it whereas the soapbars in my lp special are cleaner.

P-90s aren't supposed to sound 'bright.' They are supposed to sound fat. I agree that Duncans are too hot for most purposes but many others sound too twangy for P-90s.The best P-90 I ever heard was on my old Les Paul Junior, a stock dogear from '58. It was perfect, fat and ballsy, no twang at all, sounded like Neil Young and Leslie West.
DavidE Posted June 28, 2006 Author Posted June 28, 2006 I too would expect it sound fat as well. Not like a humbucker though.I would expect it to have some brightness and clarity due to the single coil design. Not bright like a traditional strat pickup though.I've heard good things about Fralin P90s, so I'm hopeful for this one.
HamerHokie Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 When I see a pickup wound at 8.5 k (or less) I assume it is too cool for my tastes. There seems to be a big gap between pickups in this range and the hot SDs - I haven't been able to find P-90s wound in the 10-11k range, which I think would be ideal. As long as it has a midrange peak.

Chollie Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 The voodoo's are awesome... roll back on the volume, got that vintage jr tone rollup and it's got some thwack to it. I can get some twang out of mine but I attribute that more to the amp then the guitar itself.
