PastorPaul Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I'm looking to pick up a pair of P-90s and have two offers at roughly the same price. One is for a set of Duncan Antiquities. The other is for a Rio Grande Jazzbar neck and Bluesbar bridge. I'm a fan of Rio Grande pickups but haven't tried these. The Duncans are a known quantity and would be acceptable. So, has anyone tried any of these and can offer an opinion? Thanks!
BadJaxx Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 i had a Special with Antiquities and they sounded wonderful for clean to light OD.... on the other hand, i've heard good things about the RIOs... so, i'd say go with the RIOs so you can tell us how they sound....
jwhitcomb3 Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I've got a Rio Jazzbar/Bluesbar combination in my Artist Korina (Brewmaster's old axe) and they kill. Dial 'em up and they scream, dial 'em down and they sing. Just the right combination of growl and honk, and not too hot.I bought the guitar with the intention of dropping minibuckers in it, but they remain in my drawer and this has become my go-to guitar. Here's an mp3 of me fartin' around with it a couple of years ago.-Jonathan

What kind of tone do you want?
Craig S Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I have a Fralin 15%overwound/Duncan Classic neck in my LP Special..... The Fralin sounds very good
straightblues Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I have had both. I didn't personally like the rio's. I am a traditional blues player. Into a clean amp, I didn't think the Rio had much character. They sounded good through distortion. So, if you are a rock player who uses a fair amount of gain, go with the Rio's. But if you want better cleans, go with the Antiquies. I like Lollars better than both of these.
Camstone Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I just replaced the Duncan Hot P90s in my Duotone pictured below with Jason Lollar's P90s and could not be more pleased. I was having serious microphonic feedback issues with the SDs and the neck pickup was muddy. These Lollars have fantastic definition, increased high end in both positions and none of the squeel.
PastorPaul Posted May 23, 2007 Author Posted May 23, 2007 Thanks for the replies and tip to do a search. I found a lot of information and opinions, and have some things to think about.
Brewmaster Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I like Lollars better than both of these. +1.....As much as I like the Rio's, which were a great set of pups for the Korina Artist, the Lollars just kill everything.
