Maroon 5?

I heard one of the new tunes on the radio and I swear it sounds like it could be old Motown recorded with new technology.

Thats exactly one of the reasons I like them. And sometimes they use cool old school keyboard stuff ala P-Funk. The guitarist has definately listened to some Steve Cropper.

MCC is defending the musical genius of Maroon 5 and Bon Jovi's integrity.

AB is defending John Mayer's integrity and Bon Jovi's hard rock cred.

WTF is happening to this place?!? :)

I had a shitty day and will use any excuse to pick a fight.

Not sure what Admiral's excuse is.

SWW blew up because of the songs, not a change in musical direction.

Agree with that. I saw all Bon Jovi tours through the New Jersey record.

That's the funniest thing I heard all day.

If you had seen them live supporting the first record, you'd never have believed the same band would write anything that appeared on Slippery When Wet. They were supporting the Scorpions on that first tour and they gave up nothing in the 'heavy' department.

What in gods name are you talking about? I saw that tour. I had third row here in Pittsburgh. BJ was wearing a cut up pink shirt and was decidedly non-heavy. So much so that they were booed by a large portion of the audience. "Giving up nothing" in the heavy dept? Dude...lay off the crack pipe.

FWIW I am a big BJ fan, but that statement is just plain false.

Guys,

Objectively speaking, THE band currently at the top of the rock n roll game in terms of songwriting and live shows is the Black Lips out of Atlanta, GA. Heads up if you're into good simple songs more than rackmount power conditioners and aural exciters

Surfing the HFC today, and checked out this thread. I'm not a Maroon 5 fan, but their guitarist comes from Lincoln (NE) and a good friend of mine was his guitar teacher for a while.

Commercial success often breeds contempt, and may deserve it in cases of obvious pandering. However, is there anything wrong with being commercially successful in the music business if you like the songs you play? Even if the band DID 'genre hop', maybe they like what they do now better than what they did before.

If not, as with many jobs, it's still nice on payday. What is NOT true with many jobs, is that these guys get chicks, and all the other perqs of being rockstars.

OK, here's my BIGGEST beef with them. It applies to a LOT of so-called pop these days, but Maroon 5 is sort of a lightning rod for my anger:

WHY do they feel the need to sprinkle the word "fuck" in their lyrics? Are they in need of street badass cred? They sure don't look like it.

Rap? Sure, I understand. Avril Lavigne? Pathetic, but she really needs that rebel grrl cred. My Chemical Romance? They're mysterious, dude.

But Maroon 5? They're a pop band that otherwise very carefully avoid anything with any kind of flavor that might offend a potential customer. So why the profanity?

That's a great question. I haven't ever listened closely enough to their lyrics to have noticed the f-bomb, but share your feeling about it. Gratuitous profanity is nothing more than that, and great lyrics don't require it (imho).

Makes 'em seem even more shallow, doesn't it?
