Turdus Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 I recall this being brought up before. I now find myself in a similar situation. I was sold a Jazz bass that apparently has Fralins. I am now interested in selling the bass, and would certainly like to include the Fralin pickups in the description. The pickups are standard Fender Jazz bass replacements, with cloth wiring. I do not see any markings, etc. Is there any way to confirm that these are Fralin's? I would like to accurately represent them.
DaveL Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 It's a little tough because they aren't reallymarked. The cloth wiring is a good sign. I wouldfirst check some of the various websites thatsell fralins and see if you can ID from there. I once had difficulty ID-ing a pickup, called themand ended up talking to Lindy himself, very nice guy...
Jack C Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 I think DavidE is the expert..... In his defense, I don't David guaranteed that he was a Fralin expert. He just said that he might be a Fralin expert.
Guest teefus2 Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 I think DavidE is the expert..... ha ha i have a bunch of fralin humbuckers and unbuckers. he uses (iirc) a black, crepe tape around the coil windings. not sure if he did this for bass pickups though. how do they sound? lindy's stuff (generally) sounds brighter than others and very clear and punchy. his pickup output tends to be on the low side too. 7-9k for most humbuckers.
Turdus Posted May 13, 2005 Author Posted May 13, 2005 I've got '62 & '75 US Jazz bass reissues. The Fralins are in a '60's MIM Jazz. It is the best sounding of the bunch, but not the best player. It is not brighter but just overall more thunderous, with higher output. The best player is the '75 RI, which is the thinnest sounding. After thinking about it, I am going to keep the Fralins, and swap them out with the '75. This way, I can say without a doubt what the pickups are in the MIM Jazz I will be selling, as I am the original owner of the '75.

Dude, you gotta learn to realize when driving something into the ground isn't funny. Why do you hate Fralins?
Guest teefus2 Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 quimby hates fralins and anyone who uses them. he gets "fightin' mad"........
austin122298 Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 I bought an axe withe Fralin's.The seller asked me a simple question about these unmarked pickups. Do they sound good? The answer was yes.If they don't,they are not Fralin PU's.Even if you don't like Fralin PU's find me another PU that is unmarked that sounds as good.If you can, that means someone spent a lot of money and it's all good!!
