alpep Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Do you remember when there was a power grid meltdown not long after 9/11??well I do and I have a furman power conditioner on my stereo so I see it every day. before the meltdown I was always showing around 120 volts now there are times that I barely reach 110 but never get over 115. has anyone else noticed this ?? pre grid meltdown I would only get to 110 if it was a heavy usage summer time day. Am I insane once again? no don't answer that. Is there a conspiracy? maybe I need to pay my bill more often?thoughts
jwhitcomb3 Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Perhaps your Furman got cooked in the meltdown?Somehow New Hampshire managed to isolate themselves from the grid enough to stay up.-Jonathan
alpep Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 Jonathan I don't think so but I am almost at the point of looking into buying UPS and power conditioners for my refrigerator, freezer tv etc
MoJohn Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Anything added to the circuit that the stereo is on that might cause a voltage drop?Theoretically, there are ANSI standards for voltage at your service entrance under normal conditions. The utility company should be providing 240V +/- 5%.It might be a good idea to check voltage with an accurate true RMS voltmeter and check the connections in your service panel and at the receptacles to make sure there isn't a high-resistance problem causing the voltage drop. Old circuit breakers can cause problems, too.If all that checks out, you might be able to get the utility to change the tap on their transformer to boost the voltage. You could check with your neighbors that are on the same transformer to see if their voltage is low - that would confirm the need to change taps.Isn't Custom53 a practicing electrician? Someone here is...Peace,MoJohn
jerseydrew Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Call me crazy, but I have a UPS for my 55" Big screen TV. I'm not taking any chances.
alpep Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 mojohn I will take some measurements and see what I come up with. I have a 200 amp service and the panel is about 11 years old. jersey drewI don't think you are crazy. but when I put a ups on my refrigerator just don't have the guys in the white coats come after me
tafkathundernotes Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Mojohn is right. Check the voltage - if you're falling below a predetermined limit (I think it's 108V) If you're getting low voltage, call the utility and see if they can change the tap settings on the voltage regulator for your feeder. They may set a survey meter for a week or so beforehand.
