Guest davefitz Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Hello - I own a 96 DuoTone and wondered how others got the best of the guitar. Right now I am using the Hamer recomended strings on D'addario XL110. I find the electric sound is pretty good, but the acoustic sound gets a little thin...any ideas on getting the balance better between acoustic/electric would be awesome. And if anyone is running the acoustic side through any external devices (pre's, effects, etc)...Thanks! Dave
silentman Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 On the back of the guitar, you'll find the EQ for the piezo. You can experiment with that as you like. Make sure the volume there is up as high as it goes. I run my 94 with a stereo y-cable. The stereo end goes into a stereo A/B/Y switch box. Acoustic signal goes into a chorus pedal, delay and then a DI into the PA. Electric signal goes to my amp.
belgian Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 I tried the DR zebra electric-acoustic strings, they go well on the acoustic side, but you loose something on the electric side (most on the G string).
ZR Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 I just got a Dutone in the mail today. It's a nice concept and guitar. I really like it. Is there a manual online and/or anything I should know about the jacks? One is a stereo jack? I haven't looked inside yet.Has everyone kept the stock JB/59 PU combo or has anyone found something better? Maybe the Rio bbq/Texas combo. Maybe the bbq might be too dark though, not sure. Maybe one of those Rio single coil sounding humbuckers for the neck? Anyone ever try those? Thanks for the advice!!
silentman Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 John, which version do you have? The 3-hole does not contain a stereo out, the F-hole version does.As far as pups go, I yanked the JB in mine and put a BBQ in. I like the way it sounds for what I use it for (rock/high gain). I left the 59 in the neck cuz it sounds good. The BBQ is not so dark that you can't compensate at the amp. This pickup can be bright, it's just voiced differently than your typical JB of 59 that are "stock" hamer bridge choices.I really bought mine for the piezo benefits of playing live. It just brings so much to the songs being able to play them with an acoustic tone instead of clean electric.
ZR Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 I have the 3 hole version. Thanks for the info. I just got a BBQ yesterday from Travis and it really rocks in my Hamer Chap Custom. I might need to swap it out for a test ride in the Dutone! I know what ppl say about some Piezo units sounding bad. I sometimes cringe when I hear a pro performer with a terrible, tinny acoutic tone. But, I dial mine in to sound quite realistic and I'm pretty picky when it comes to tone. Anyway, the Dutone is nice for that but man it can really rock too (high gain metal). I'm impressed!!
belgian Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 There are some Threeholers with Phat cats around here, they seem to be great. Mine has the standard pickups, I am very happy with it.On the piezo : I am still searching for the right sound (it's somewhere in there) - maybe I'll try the Mama Bear.
Brooks Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 Has everyone kept the stock JB/59 PU combo or has anyone found something better? i like phat cats better than jb/59.for acoustic gigs, i use elixer super light acoustic strings (.11 high E, and wound 3rd).
