Special J Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 So, I used to tech for a really great local player who had an original Zemaitis Metal Front LP style guitar. I really grew to love that guitar and took care of it as if it were my own. I would play it any chance I could. I've been thinking about that axe lately and it's giving me serious GAS. Since it's probably not a good financial move to take a 2nd mortgage on my house to buy an original one, I've been eyeing the Greco copy/reissues. I know Greco makes quality instruments, but >$3k seems a little steep to me. Anyone else have love for Zemaitis? Anyone play the Grecos?

I checked it out briefly, and it was actually a lot nicer than I thought. I never considered one of those before, but if one could be had at a better price, I'd try it out. I think they are priced at close to twice what I'd pay, but I've been starting to see a few used bargains cropping up every now and then. There are two series of the metal front guitars - a higher-end ($5k and up) model and a $2k-$3k version.Unfortunately, the ones I see in the $1,500 range tend to be the non-metal front models with the hearts/clubs/diamonds/spades or 4 diamond inlays. No interest in those here...

IMO, these are seriously over-priced, especially since they're bolt-necks, but I've played a couple and they feel "right".I've been keeping an eye out for a used Steel-Top Chinese Dragon in the sub $2K range. No luck so far . . .
Turdus Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 As Chris stated, my band mate does have a Zemaitis.. one of the newer Greco ones. It is certainly a cool looking guitar. It sounds and plays just fine. Has Dimarzio pickups. His is a black LP style, with metal front plate.It's hard for me to compare it to anything tone wise. Steve is the kind of player that could plug any guitar in, and it would sound like him. I'd say they are niche market, and he was able to get his at a good price used.If you have any specific questions, let me know, and I'll see what I can find out.
