Maple neck on a Sunburst?

Question

Hi. The 91' Sunburst Floyd i have coming has what appears to be a maple neck. The top is amber, the back a caramel colour, and the neck is definitely three piece maple.

Is that something standard to Floyds? For extra strength? Or an anomaly?

Cheers Don

After the early mid-80s, Hamer used maple necks on pretty much all stock Floyded guitars.

It is definitely a strength thing.

My '06 has a mahogany neck and it's not a big deal. Jackson, for one has been making mahogany necked soloists for years and plenty of other manufacturers make them with no qualms as well. It might have been an issue when Floyd mounting nuts went all the way through the neck, but that hasn't been the case for more than a decade so...

Is there much difference in the tone and feel between the maple neck and mahogany neck?

Posted

Feel is identical because they're both finished. Tone; well, it's hard for me to say. The specs on my '06 are different from the specs of the Sunburst I had in several ways that would also affect the tone (different pickups, different body thickness, different fretboard wood). The Sunburst definitely kicked ass though.

Haven't noticed any real difference Don- but my 91 has a Bareknuckles 'Rebel Yell" pickup, the 92 is the stock Seymour JB- so it's hard to judge as they sound different anyway. Might replace the Bareknuckles with the JB when I change strings- just to do a straight comparison..........see if I can find that soldering iron......

Nice one mate, appreciate it! My playing style, if i have one.. has me moving the neck around a lot.

I love that natural vibrato you get from pulling the neck back and forwards. I sold an amp a few weeks ago to this dude., as i was playing he wa astonished at how much of a chorus effect i was getting with my style.

All that to say, the neck is a big part of my attraction to a guitar. I like em' love em' hate em' all based on the necks movement. This 81' special i got from Moose, man i can near turn it inside out! Love it! Never owned a guitar with that much movement, easily had too. I know maple can be stiffer, tho my teles move some.

My 335 is the same, awesome bender. Maybe thats why the thinner neck has not put me off. I love a fat neck as much as anyone, but felt real at home on this special. AND my playing callous's have never been as healthy! I can NOT put it down!

Will try and get some pics tomorrow.

Hi Don,

Okay- swapped out the BareKnuckles p-up for the JB- so both Floyd Sunbursts are the same. Well, there's so noticable difference in sound between maple neck and mahogany through the amp- mind you, I did have the Boogie MkIII at about 1 in the house, so maybe it's not a great test.

Did think that the 92 with the mahogany neck was a little more reasonant acoustically- I mean, I really wouldn't put money on it, or maybe I just wanted there to be an obvious difference.

So, maybe that's why my 92 is not maple- maybe there was no real reason to continue using maple on the Sunburst Archtops.

Cheers, Dave :D

Nice one Dave. Do you find much difference in tone between the fixed bridge and the floyd? Its a fair lump of metal, and we all know how much a strat changes with trem to fixed, much fatter fixed bridge.

I know im gonna find out soon enough :P but the obsessive nature wants to know!

Thanks dood!

Hi man,

Yeh, unfortunately there's definately is a trade off- the body with the fixed bridge is much 'louder' acoustically. My 07 Studio Custom is just 'Gibson Les Paul'- I had a Class 5 until recently- my last LP- and I preferred the Studio custom. The floyd does loose a lot of sustain- the body doesn't 'sing' as much as the fixed does. You notice it with good old tube ovedrive in the amp- the stoptail will give you that AC/DC tube crunch no problem- but the floyd will leave you looking for a little bit more boost to get those chord notes to ring for that little bit longer........

Again though, just the observations of a Hamer crazed guitar player..............

Cheers :D

Hmmmm. As i thought. Could be cool tho, find out soon enough. I should get my money back anyways, if its not for me. Will have a direct comparison when it arrives.

Just watched that youtube vid of Shawn Tubbs on a Talledega, sweet tones.

Well- exactly- you'll soon be standing doing direct comparisons for hours- I certainly did, both when I got the first one with the LP- then again between floyd and stoptail!

Anyway- let me know what you think...........just remember and give me a shout if you feel the need to pass any of them on.........or deal for a nice 07 Studio custom.......

Cheers mate
