Acoustic pickup/preamp question

Question

Posted

A buddy of mine bought an acoustic guitar. He wants to install a pickup. He is trying to

decide between an LR Baggs unit or a Fishman. I think the Fishman is a Matrix series he was

looking at and is a piezo under the bridge. Anyways, thoughts/opinions on which might be better? I'm inclined to say Fishman but I'm not too familiar with either brands.

Thanks in advance!

I like the LR Baggs I-beam active; it sounds great and the only change you have to make to your guitar is to drill a larger hole where the end-pin (strap button) goes for the plug. The underbridge pickup, in-soundhole volume control and battery pack go in with double sided tape. You don't have to drill or cut anything else in your guitar, and if you remove it all, you replace the end-pin and you'd never know that guitar had once had a pickup in it. I think they're under $200 installed.

Excellent system, I've got one in one of my 12-strings. Through a good sound system, it's hard to tell where you stop hearing the guitar and start hearing the PA. They're not at all feedback resistant, though.

Make sure you get somebody experienced to install it. Placement is critical. That said, it's the most natural sounding pickup system I've ever heard, and I'm fussy about this stuff.
