Ethan Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 Hey, I want to start playing my Gibson Melody Maker more live, but I hate the tuners on it. Usually I like the Grovers with the tulip machine heads like on Les Paul Customs, but I've been looking at Sperzel locking tuners lately too. Any takes on pros and cons of these? Recommendations? Thanks!
Ethan Posted August 18, 2005 Author Posted August 18, 2005 They don't hold the tuning as well as I would like, and the feel that you get turning them is not as consistent as I would like it to be, if that makes any sense. For reference, I use 11-52 gauge strings in standard, with the low E string dropped down to a D.
tgoss Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 If nothing else on a non-trem guitar, locking tuners make it a breeze to change strings. Best thing is to find a drop in replacement.
silentman Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 Are they open or closed? If open maybe a squirt of 3 in 1 oil might loosen em up and smooth them out.I don't think this applies, but check the screw that keeps the button on the shaft. loosen/tighten if necessary.Try some chapstick (clear) in the nutslots for lubrication. works wonders.
tobereeno Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 I love Sperzels. I can't think of a single thing that's bad about them.
darc Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 I really dig the planet waves auto-cropping tuners. Fast string changes, no tools. Can't beat that.
cmatthes Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Make sure to note the headstock thickness as well as the size of the tuner holes. You may need to do a little surgery to install some replacement tuners. The Melody Maker headstocks are a typically bit thinner than, say a Les Paul headstock.
