Best free cd ripper? FreeRip MP3?

ZR

Question

Posted

Well, I have quite a bit of music in my computer but I'd like to put the rest of my CDs in there. So, far I've used Media Monkey and/or possibly a Toshiba product that came with an old MP3 player.

What's the best free software to use? Are some faster and/or higher quality than others? And, what suggestions would you guys have in regards to file format and quality that I should save things as?

I can tell you that I might have a general category of music where maybe some compression could be tolerated fine, and another category where I would only want loss-less compression or no compression. What suggestions do you have?

Thanks!!

I like iTunes. Some people hate it. Isn't microsoft media player free?

I've always used CDex (free - do a google search) - about 12 years now. Ogg Vorbis (.ogg) are great quality if you're pushed for size (dunno why .oggs aren't default format tbh) but most people would go for 192kbps .mp3's as standard (in my experience).

As far as ripping whole CD's, I use the built in ripper from Windows media player. Format wise, I usually don't go below 192 kbps mp3. http://www.poikosoft.com/ used to have a free extractor / converter that worked real well, I still have the old free version, not sure if the newer version is still free.
