Metal tubes?

My neighbor is a Hammer(radio) from way back. We get to talking about tubes occasionally. He has given me several 6L6's. Included in the bunch are metal cased RCA's.. Not exactly glowing glass but knowing we all love the old glass. What is the consensus/thoughts on the old metal tubes?

Those are 6L6s not 6L6GCs. Huge difference. IIRC the plate voltages on most amps that take the 6L6GCs will smoke those metal tubes. Again IIRC, the only ones worth a shit are the 6V6s and even those are marginal.

I wouldn't be so quick to chuck 'em - antique radio guys might be able to use them as radio circuits generally have lower plate voltages. A lower gain head or combo that uses 6L6's might also be doable with those. I had a SE tube combo at one time that took a 6V6 power tube, an RCA metal can didn't sound too bad in there (granted, it was a "clean" amp running only about 275-300V on the plate). Generally speaking, a head may, in most circumstances, be less vulnerable to microphonics than a combo will.
