lonote049 Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown passed away in his hometown of Orange, TX. His home in suburban New Orleans was destroyed by Katrina but he was successfully evacuated. He had been battling lung cancer and heart disease for the last year or so. I would imagine the disaster was the last straw. I saw him live several times and, no matter what kind of music you favor, you would have to say that he was a hell of a musician. This has been a very bad year, too many legends passed away.
Dasein Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 This sucks. My woman and I saw Gate about 3 years ago in Vancouver. She's Indian, and as the only woman of colour at the gig, Gate kept winking at her and giving me (a big goofy white guy) the thumbs up and kudos! We were planted right in front of the stage - centre - and it was an amazing gig. My girl is going to be crushed.
shankyboy Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 What a tragic loss. Gatemouth was one of my all-time favorites. The last drummer I had, played for Gatemouth for 10 years and was the drummer on the last Gatemouth release. He had some great stories about working with Gate. R.I.P.
lonote049 Posted September 12, 2005 Author Posted September 12, 2005 Arizona, huh...do you know Rena Haus and Texas Red?
shankyboy Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Actually, I'm from San Antonio. I have been out here in Phoenix on a job assignment for a little over a year now. I don't recognize the names you are referring to. Are they players here in Phoenix?
hamerican gigolo Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Another one of the greats gone.Did anyone ever see the the short film that hewas in about ten years ago?It was he and a little girl discussing the joys of music.Wonderful film. R.I.P.
shankyboy Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 Have you ever seen the Freddie King video featuring all of his appearances on a show called "The Beat"? A very young Gatemouth Brown was the house guitarist on the show. There is one segment where Clarence steps up to cut heads with Freddie. What an awesome video!!
lonote049 Posted September 13, 2005 Author Posted September 13, 2005 I have seen those videos. Rena Haus and Texas Red are local Mpls/St. Paul musicians who came here from AZ. Texas Red is in the AZ Blues Hall of Fame.
shankyboy Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 Lonenote, do you know Damon "Sonny Boy" Lee? I believe Mpls was his old stomping grounds.
