Any Vox VTX Amp users out there?

Hi Everyone,

I bought a new amp recently, one of the Vox Valvetronix amps. This one is the AD120VTX. I'm really impressed with the sounds and feel of the amp. It has much more of a tube feel than most of the other modeling amps I've tried. I had used a Fender CyberTwin for the last 4-5 years and I'm liking this amp better, even though I also liked my CyberTwin. (just sold it on Ebay)

I'm playing my Newport through this amp and it sounds really sweet. I particularly like the AC30 models and the Dumble OD Special model. The Newport really sings when I use tha Dumble OD model using my neck pickup. I've never played through a Dumble so I really don't know how close this model is to the real thing, but it delivers a very usable tone, kind of a Roben Ford sort of tone.

The AC30 sound is also a lot of fun with this particular guitar. The Newport already sounds kind of Beatle-ish and even more so through the AC30 amp setting.

Anyway, I've been having fun with this amp and wondered if there were any other people out there playing Hamer's through the Vox Valvetronix amps. If so, how are you liking them?

I know SirD did for a while.

I had the 60 watt mono head with the large floor controller, but I just don't get along with presets. I prefer to do things on the fly. I thought it sounded ok, but I didn't have the proper Vox speaker cabinet to go with it. I did think it had some cool features with the large pedalboard. I recently sold it on thegearpage.

I tried working with a Cybertwin for about a year with my wedding band, but the sound was inconsistent from room to room. And the limitations in the effects section forced me to bring along pedals anyway, so I figured I'd just go back to my tube amps. I even tried the midi controller thing for a while, but I just don't get along with presets.

I never did the preset thing well either, but on BadgerD's recommendation, I picked up a Line6 Duoverb and got the cab from him (Awesome pack job!). I've had a lot of fun coming up with presets that I can use and have found that there are big +s to having this setup.

It doesn't do the AC30 as well as I like, so I imagine that the Vox has that down somehow, but I'd probably want to pick up the real deal there anyway.

I had one of the VT models - mine was an open-back 2x12. Loved the tones and features, easily the best modeler I've ever played with, but mine had some electronic problems. It was not under warranty (I got it used) and no shop near me would touch it. I sold it for a loss. I heard reliability was an issue in the older ones like I had, I'm sure they've resolved those issues since then, at least that's what I've heard.

LOL.... I tried the Duoverb too. I just didn't like the sound of the amp.

Jeff R,

Yes, I had some concerns about the Vox modeling amps after hearing some horror stories about the original Valvetronix amps. There were some serious reliability problems with that first run in the Valvetronix product line. After researching it I found out that the VTX series was created to fix a lot of the problems that they had early on. They did quite a few changes to make the cabinet lighter and more reliable, and also changed the speakers. The closed back cabinet is design supposed to help the bass response and projection.

So far, so good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the reliability issues are solved on this VTX series.

I've got the VC12 footswitch too, which is a must have for this amp.
