troubleshooting buzz

Question

So after dialing in an awesome bunch of presets on the Boss ME 50 multi effects, I noticed a significant amount of electrical buzz/hiss. Other guitarist uses same set up and has almost zero noise. The buzz is really pronounced. Need to get rid of it.

*amp does NOT buzz when I run directly into it and use amp's gain.

* Buzzes with all of my guitars, not specific to one guitar.

* ME 50 is used in-line from guitar to amp into clean channel. 10 band eq in effects loop- turning off eq does not minimize buzz.

* Dialing down the gain on the eq, amp and ME 50 only effected the buzz marginally.

* ME 50 does not have a grounded plug and amp does not have any discernible grounding controls on head.

* some distortion fx were more noisy than others-

* Volume pedal set at zero does kill the buzz. Seems to suggest that buzz is originating from the ME 50.

I'd love to get this ironed out before a big gig this Saturday. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Try going Boss unit into the return of FX loop,

avoiding the clean channel preamp all together.

ME 50> EQ> FX return of amp.

Don't know if the ME-50 has one, but my ME-70 had a noise supression feature. Depending on how I set up, mine would get a little buzzy for my tastes w/certain in-box distortions. I'd find the sweet spot in the NS to shave the buzz without killing off sustain and stuff.

Yup, ME 50 has NS as well. Tried that with marginal results. I did mess with the set up a bit and tweeked down the drive & level on the in box distortion with some improvement. I also reduced the gain on the clean channel to almost nothing. I think it may have been too much combined gain from the 3 sources- the ME 50, the 10 band eq and the amp's own gain in the channel. At higher "gig" volume, it just hummed out of control until volume pedal was depressed.

Still want to try the fx loop set up Murkat suggested.
